On Tuesday, May 8, in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales, Dr. José R. Banegas shared his thorough insight regarding the health risks and future medical implications of hypertension, as analyzed from a variety of perspectives. Awareness, treatment, and prevention were each discussed in order to have a complete picture of the condition and its complications.

Dr. Banegas is professor of Preventative Medicine and Public Health on the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid /IdiPAZ y CIBER in Epidemiology and Public Health, Madrid, Spain. His primary research and health politics interests are in the field of epidemiology and cardiovascular disease prevention, in addition to their major risk factors.

He serves as a member on various boards including the Editorial Board of the Journal of Hypertension (European Society of Hypertension); Programa de Actividades Preventivas y Promoción de la Salud cardiovascular de la Sociedad Española de Medicina de Familia; and the scientific committee of Registro Español de Monitorización ambulatoria de la presión arterial. He is also an honorary member of the Sociedad Española de Hipertensión y riesgo vascular.

Dr. Banegas remarked that, in terms of risk factors, high blood pressure is the leading cause of premature death around the globe and that 12 million adults suffer from high blood pressure in Spain. May 17 was World Hypertension Day.

What are the best things today to do for our country? Dr. Banegas says being healthy and being productive. As we continue to improve our lifestyle habits and educate ourselves, we are able to focus on strengthening preventative measures.

The presentation concluded with this thought on the final slide:

“El desafío no es preguntar si es posible mejorar, sino tener la visión, la apasionada dedicación, la inteligencia hacia temas relevantes, el liderazgo, y la inteligencia política de dedicar recursos necesarios.”
